Young White British Men Have The Worst Reputation In The UK, Finds Poll

Young white British men are the most derided social group in the UK, according to a YouGov survey.

The poll found British people believe young white men are the most likely to get drunk frequently and have many sexual partners. They are also considered to be the least polite social group and most likely to do drugs, alongside Black Caribbean men in their twenties.

The survey asked participants to say whether 48 separate social groups had certain positive and negative attributes and how likely each group were to take part in positive and negative activities. The different groups were based on age, ethnicity and gender.

Peter Kellner, President of YouGov, said in a Prospect article: “The lousy reputation of young white men is one of the most striking things to emerge from our surveys. When we look at individual characteristics, white men in their twenties have the worst reputation, out of all 48 groups, for drunkenness, sleeping around, hard work and politeness.

“This is more than a curious poll finding,” he continued. “Immigration from eastern Europe is one of the most fraught political issues these days, and at the root of David Cameron’s attempts to renegotiate Britain’s relationship with the European Union.

“Are young Polish men, in particular, taking jobs from young white Britons? If they are, our results suggests that it is in large measure because we hold young Polish men in much higher regard.”

The poll found gender has more of an effect on Britons’ perceptions than age or ethnicity

Responding to the findings, 22-year-old postgraduate student Alex Tyndall told HuffPost UK: “I’m a bit upset about being in this group since I try not to be rude, I’m not promiscuous and I work hard. And I’ve never taken drugs!

“But I guess I know a few people who fit the bill quite well,” he added.

“All in all if the worst thing to happen to young white guys is that they get laughed at they’ve got an easy ride.”

The survey also found that white British women in their sixties were the most popular social group, scoring highest in terms of honesty, politeness and willingness to help others.

Throughout the findings, gender had a much greater effect on the perceptions of British people than age or ethnicity, with women forming five of the six most-praised groups.

This did not, however, include white British women in their twenties, who were the third most derided group, closely following their male counterparts for perceived promiscuity and likelihood to get drunk frequently.
